Hay fever (Allergic rhinitis) is associated with an immune response response to environmental allergens which cause the release of the chemical histamine.
The allergens can be seasonal (eg grass, weed and tree pollens) or perennial (eg dust mites, cat and dog dander). Some people experience both types.
Symptoms can be further aggravated by chemical irritants (eg smoking, including exposure to second-hand smoke).
The symptoms of Hay Fever can include:
For some people, symptoms are seasonal (linked to pollen in spring or summer), while others experience them year-round due to indoor triggers like dust or pets.
Hay fever can coexist with other conditions which which is why a detailed medical assessment is vital.
Asthma occurs in 30% of patients with allergic rhinitis, and allergic rhinitis occurs in more than 80% of patients with allergic asthma.
It can also be associated with sinusitis and dermatitis.
