How do Chemical Peels work?

Chemical Peels are applied topically to exfoliate the upper layers of skin whilst stimulating the regeneration
of new skin cells in the deeper layers leaving your skin healthier and refreshed. This process can treat several common skin concerns such as acne, acne scarring, melasma, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation redness and sun damage.

Our highly experienced dermal therapist will customise a safe and effective treatment plan specifically for you to address your skin concerns and improve your skin health.

Prior to having a chemical peel, a consultation is required with our experienced dermal therapist. Your consultation involves a full skin and facial assessment and provides you the opportunity to discuss your area(s) of concern and expectations. An individualised treatment plan will be developed, and peels can be combined with other therapies to optimise your results. You will also have clinical photography so we can monitor your treatment outcome and progress.

Our therapist will discuss how to prepare your skin prior to starting a course of peels. Good skin preparation improves the penetration of the peel. It also increases skin healing and recovery and reduces the risk of side effects. Appropriate after care will also be discussed to aid with recovery and to optimise treatment outcomes.

Chemical peels differ in ingredients, strength and penetration so down time and recovery will vary between peels. This will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation based on the peel course you are having.

Generally, after a peel your face will be irritated and can appear red. Depending on the peel you might experience mild skin shedding or peeling after 3-5 days.

It is important to follow your aftercare instructions provided to aid healing and minimise side effects. It is important to use adequate sun protection post peel to protect the healing skin.

Improvements to your skin are subtle and will be enhanced by completing the recommended course of treatments. Peel regimes depend on the condition being treated and the type of peel. The expected results for your peel will be discussed during your consultation. Improved skin quality, texture and tone are usually seen after one treatment.

Ongoing maintenance with home care products and regular treatments are important to maintain skin health and results.

The risks and side effects of your peel will be explained to you during your consultation.
Medium and Deep peels have more downtime and possible side effects. In some cases, post inflammatory pigmentation can occur which can be minimised by wearing broad spectrum SPF and avoiding the sun post treatment.

If your skin feels, red, tender or sensitive cool packs can be used with simple pain relief.

Infection and scaring are rare and can be minimised by allowing the skin to heal passively and not pick or scratch the shedding skin.
